My friends and I are going to Laos during the Chinese New Year holidays. We would like to go beyond Vientiane and Luang Prabang. What do you suggest? - Tang Mei Kheng

Head to Xieng Khouang province to visit the Plain of Jars, a historic cultural site eight hours from Luang Prabang by bus.
Scattered over the plateau in the province are jar-like stones, which researchers believe were used in the past as urns or to store food.
Do not stray from designated paths at this archaeological site - there might be unexploded bombs from the war in the 1960s at unauthorised sites.
Also, visit Vang Vieng, a six-hour bus ride from Luang Prabang (around US$10 or S$14), or a four-hour ride from Vientiane (US$3 to US$5). The province is known for its limestone karst terrain, which is honeycombed with unexplored tunnels and caverns.
The Nam Song River there is popular with adventurous types who might want to kayak or ride a tube down the river. It is surrounded by picturesque limestone cliffs and formations.
