I've been reading about backpacking in travel magazines and I wish to backpack someday, most probably in SE.Asia. As a beginner in backpacking, any tips that I should keep in mind?

The things that you need to pack
I usually spend 3 weeks travelling around a country. Before you set off, I suggest that you do your homework to know about the country's sites of interests.
A good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guide will give you all the facts that you require to plan an itinerary.
Here are some things that I recommend you should pack:
1) Bring a cheap phone that you're not attached to
2) Camera with multiple memory cards
3) A microfiber towel (it's humid in SE.Asia)
4) A sarong (useful when it's cold or when you're visiting temples/places of worship)
5) Anything that you're comfortable wearing at home
Do not bring fancy, thief-attracting stuff. Once stolen, it might just dampen your spirits to enjoy your first backpacking trip.

Go backpacking in Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam
For adventure and great scenery, go to either of these 3 places. The scenery is amazing and what makes up the country are the smiley people and their cultural values.
For Laos, I recommend that you concentrate in North Laos as it is much cheaper than in the South. Also, getting off the track in remote villages should let you enjoy prices like they were 3 years ago.
Remember to great people whom you meet in Laos "Sabaidy" before you start talking. It would be considered impolite otherwise.
It may cost a little bit more but backpacking is more about the adventure than the money. There's plenty to see/do, cheap, easy and fairly safe.
