SINGAPORE - Budget carrier Scoot revealed that it will fly to up to five cities by the end of the year.

It plans to include China and Japan on its route network but did not disclose which cities it will fly to, said CEO Cambell Wilson (above, centre) in a recent interview with Bloomberg TV.

Earlier this month, the Singapore Airlines' (SIA) wholly-owned subsidiary announced that it will fly to Gold Coast, Australia, in addition to Sydney.

Scoot will operate flights to destinations as long as nine hours away and offer fares as much as 40 per cent lower than full-service carriers.

According to Mr Wilson, the unit will complement SIA's full-service business by either tapping new customers on existing routes or by adding new destinations that are predominately leisure markets.

Scoot will begin operations with four Boeing 777-200s jets and it hopes to increase to 14 planes by 2015.

With a start-up capital of S$283 million, the carrier said it hopes to increase the number of pilots five times from 50 to 250 by the end of next year.

For starters, it expects to fill up to 75 to 80 per cent of seats.

Mr Wilson also said that it does not intend to fly to Europe soon as economic uncertainties and the region's debt crisis may dampen consumer spending.
