BANDER SERI BEGAWAN - Major construction works for the modernisation of Brunei International Airport is expected to commence soon.

This was announced by the Brunei Economic Development Board together with the Department of Civil Aviation in a press release circulated to the media yesterday.

According to the announcement, several measures will be implemented to ensure the smooth operation of the airport during the construction period including the closure of the Public Arrival Hall, relocation of the public parking lot 'P1' in front of the terminal building and traffic diversion to 'P2' parking lot for all traffic heading to the Airport Terminal Building.

The use of relocated/rediverted facilities will commence on March 7, 2012.

Public notices will be put up from February 18 onwards while a new "Meeters and Greeters" hall and a temporary arrival canopy will be opened for public convenience.

Also to ensure public safety as well as convenience, road signages will be put up to direct traffic to the new designated areas and traffic wardens will be mobilised to ensure that motorists are properly directed to the new parking area.

The announcement also stated that both BEDB and DCA seek public cooperation and understanding while encouraging outbound passengers to plan their travel and departures carefully.

Both agencies will also ensure that the public and other stakeholders are informed in advance of any other major works scheduled to take place at the airport.

Yesterday, Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, visited the airport terminal and affected areas and was briefed by the consultants on preparations for the upcoming construction works.

Accompanying the Minister was Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of BEDB Dato Paduka Hj Ali Apong.

According to the two agencies, the concept design of the airport expansion project which began at the end of 2010, is handled by Singapore Consortium, Changi Airport Consultants Pte Ltd/AECOM Asia Co Ltd and the contractors appointed for the construction works are Trans Resources Corporation Sdn Bhd JV Swee Sdn Bhd.

Aimed at improving the existing environment and appearance, the project is expected to enhance convenience to passengers and the public through the expansion of floor areas, the development of iconic structures and green features as well as the installation of a much improved security system.

The project, when completed in approximately 36 months, will see the Brunei International Airport improving on the quality of its services by emphasising on public convenience, safety and comfort.

Pg Hj Mohd Zain Pg Hj Abd Razak, Acting Director of DCA, said "DCA is working closely with BEDB and the contractor to ensure these changes are implemented smoothly and with minimunm disruptions to members of the public. Some of these Changes are temporary to make way for permanent and better facilities".
