Singapore Airlines (SIA) has pledged to provide alternative travel arrangements for passengers who were due to fly with a partner airline that closed down suddenly.

The codeshare partner airline, Spanair, ceased operations last Friday. It was a Star Alliance member that operated flights within Spain, as well as to Africa and other parts of Europe.

SIA said on its website last Saturday that it will also honour bookings that customers made with Spanair on or before that day for flights operated by SIA.

Administrative or penalty fees for refunds, rebooking or re-routing will be waived for customers holding confirmed tickets issued on or before last Saturday.

At least 22,000 passengers were stranded at Spanish airports over the weekend because of Spanair's closure, Spanish media reported.

A total of 647 Spanair flights were cancelled between last Saturday and today, said Spain's Public Works Ministry.

Spanair suspended its services abruptly after a failed tie-up with Qatar Airways.

Most travel agencies here do not use Spanair for their tour packages. Chan Brothers, for example, said it is unaffected by Spanair's shutdown as it uses SIA flights for its tours in Spain.
