SINGAPORE - The newly revamped Sun Yat Sen museum is now opened to the public after one year of renovations.

To celebrate its opening, in conjunction with the launch of the Wan Qing CultureFest 2011, visitors to the museum can enter for free from Oct 9 - 30.

With the help of creative multi-media displays and a whole new storyline, the refurbished museum aims to re-create the ambience from a century ago, when the 20th century villa served as the home and headquarters of Dr Sun Yat Sen‘s revolutionary activities in Southeast Asia.

More specifically, it offers visitors a closer look at the lives of Singapore‘s revolutionary pioneers, and highlights the pivotal role Singapore and Nanyang played in the success of the 1911 Revolution.

For the first time ever, original artefacts of the 1911 Revolution - more than 180 of them - will be displayed.

The museum's original five permanent galleries have been replaced by four permanent galleries and one special exhibition gallery.

The themes of the four permanent galleries are: Introduction of Wan Qing Yuan and Main Characters (Gallery 1), Wan Qing Yuan – Nanyang as Base for Revolution (Gallery 2), Continuing the Spirit of the 1911 Revolution in Singapore and Malaya – In Search of Identity and Modernity (Gallery 3 and Gallery 4).

The temporary exhibition gallery, also the fifth gallery, will house travelling exhibitions from other museums and institutions worldwide.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MUSEUM

Introduction of Wan Qing Yuan and Main Characters (Gallery 1)
Visitors will be introduced to the history of the villa and how it came to be known as Wan Qing Yuan. It also features the lives and contributions of Teo Eng Hock, Lim Nee Soon and Tan Chor Lam, the three key supporters of Dr Sun Yat Sen in Singapore.

Wan Qing Yuan – Nanyang as Base for Revolution (Gallery 2)
Nanyang played a crucial role in the success of the 1911 Revolution. This gallery will explore the reasons behind the 1911 Revolution, and the role played by Singapore as the headquarters of the revolutionary movement (Tong Meng Hui) in Southeast Asia.

Continuing the Spirit of the 1911 Revolution in Singapore and Malaya – In Search of Identity and Modernity (Gallery 3 & 4)
Dr Sun Yat Sen‘s revolutionary ideals had far-reaching effects beyond the geographical boundaries of China. Gallery 3 highlights the impact the 1911 Revolution had on the Chinese community in both Singapore and the region. Key supporters of Dr Sun Yat Sen in Malaya will also be featured.

Gallery 4 explores the changes that swept the Chinese world as a result of the 1911 Revolution. Among the many implications, impacts on commerce, trade, education and vernacular literature in various parts of the world will be expanded on.
